General Experience Playing Here: 2.5
It seems that the Sahara poker room has made the decision to focus its energies on low dollar buy-in tournaments and they do that pretty well. They have very up to date tournament software and get a lot of players entered into the tournaments and the tournaments are well run. The payouts seem to be pretty standard for Vegas, with about 80% of the buy-ins being distributed in prize money. The number of chips that you start with ($2000) + rebuy ($1500) and the 20 minute blind structure are as good as any of the low cost buy-in tournaments in Vegas. If you like playing tournaments and don’t want to feel like you have to get cards in the first half hour, we would recommend trying the Sahara tournaments-just remember that it will take longer for this tournament to finish than some of the other low dollar tournaments in Vegas.
The cash games seem to suffer, particularly when the tournaments are running and with 3 tournaments a day, that is a good part of the time. There never seems to be a lot of cash games going, although usually some start up after people are busted out of the tournaments. The Sahara does have a bad beat that is just Aces full getting beat, so it does hit fairly often.
Competition Rating: 2
Aggressiveness Rating: 3
Player Mix: 3
We played in the tournament on two different occasions and the tournament seems to draw a lot of inexperienced players and the aggressive players seem to dominate. We think over time, you could make some money playing in this tournament.
Played in a $2/$4 cash game which also had several inexperienced players and a couple of tight locals. There wasn’t a lot of money to be made in this game but it was all that was being spread at the time.
Room Condition: 2
The tables and chairs are pretty worn and the room is pretty crowded, particularly when the tournaments are going. Everything about the room is old, but at least it is semi-blocked off. During a tournament it can get pretty smoky even though it is a non-smoking room. They do have a few nice TVs but you can’t seem them from a lot of the seats and during the tournaments most of them are showing tournament information.
Dealer Rating: 1.5
The dealers were nothing spectacular and a couple were down right awful. They seemed to know a lot of the players and would often engage in conversation with them and neglect running the game. Most were adequate but some made several mistakes,We actually had a dealer that told a player who was deciding whether to call a bet in the tournament that he should call because he had pot odds.
Cocktail Service: 2
The cocktail service was not real good, possible driven by the fact that it didn’t seem that they were getting tipped too well.
Management Rating: 2.5
The management seemed to be overly focused on working the tournaments and don’t seem to concentrate enough on the cash games, but other than that they seem fine.
Comps: ?
We aren’t aware if there were any comps available. If there were, we didn’t take advantage of them.
